Inspired by the experience of blackouts in many African countries, where power cuts are common at night, the designers sought to create a lamp that could provide illumination during these dark periods. Drawing inspiration from rechargeable flashlights, they came up with the idea of a lamp that could be recharged and unplugged to function as a flashlight.
What sets the Double Face lamp apart is its two-sided design. When electricity is normal, it can be used like any regular lamp, charging the flashlight inside. However, when a blackout occurs, users can simply rotate the head of the lamp to activate the upper light, which continues to illuminate using the stored charge. This allows users to work or study in the dark during power outages. Additionally, the upper light can be detached and used as a flashlight when mobility is required.
The lamp's shell is made of lightweight and corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy, while the base is constructed from plastic, ensuring slow heat conduction and preventing the user from feeling cold. With dimensions of 18cm x 18cm x 48cm, the Double Face lamp is both compact and practical.
During the design process, the team faced challenges in creating the lamp's complex internal structure and ensuring a high machining qualification rate. However, their dedication and innovative approach allowed them to overcome these obstacles and bring the Double Face lamp to life.
The Double Face lamp not only provides a practical solution for blackout scenarios but also adds a touch of modernity and innovation to any space. Its rechargeable and flashlight functions offer users comfort and convenience, while its sleek design language enhances the stability of modern work environments.
The project began in April 2019 in Anhui and was completed in May 2019. It was exhibited in Shantou in June 2019, showcasing the ingenuity and creativity of its designers. The Double Face lamp has also received recognition in the form of the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2020. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial requirements.
With the Double Face lamp, Guorong Wu and Xuhui Chen have created a versatile and stylish lighting solution that seamlessly combines form and function. Whether it's providing illumination during power outages or serving as a portable flashlight, this innovative design is a testament to their commitment to enhancing the lives of users through thoughtful and creative design.
